Google DeepMind thinks its new Genie 3 world model presents a stepping stone toward AGI
DeepMind has unveiled Genie 3, its latest “foundation” world model, which it claims could help pave the way toward artificial general intelligence (AGI). Unlike narrower world models designed for specific domains, Genie 3 is capable of generating rich, interactive 3D environments from simple text prompts. These environments can be photo-realistic or creatively stylized, while retaining coherent details and enabling continuous interaction. DeepMind describes this as an important advancement because it enables the training and testing of general-purpose AI agents in diverse, dynamic simulations without the constraints of pre-built worlds. By delivering both realism and adaptability, Genie 3 is intended to bridge the gap between current AI systems and the flexible, general reasoning abilities expected from future AGI.

OpenAI launches GPT-5 free to all ChatGPT users
On August 7, 2025, OpenAI launched GPT-5 as the new default model for ChatGPT, making it available to all users, including those on the free tier. The release consolidates previous models like GPT-4, GPT-4o, and o-series variants into a single flagship system, offering faster responses, improved reasoning, expanded context windows, and reduced hallucinations. Free users can access GPT-5 with usage limits, while paid tiers Plus, Pro, and Team gain higher limits and access to more powerful versions such as GPT-5 Pro and “thinking-pro.” New features include personality customization, integration with external tools like Gmail and Google Calendar, and enhanced capabilities in coding, writing, visual analysis, and health-related assistance.

Google calls its new AI model a “virtual satellite.”
Google DeepMind’s AlphaEarth Foundations is an AI model designed to map Earth’s land and coastal waters in high detail by combining data from satellite imagery, radar, 3D lidar, and climate simulations. The system produces compressed 10×10-meter “embeddings” that reduce storage needs while improving mapping accuracy, enabling consistent, time-aware coverage even in cloud-covered or remote regions. Annual embedding layers for 2017–2024 are available in Google Earth Engine and are being used by more than 50 organizations to monitor changes such as deforestation, agricultural patterns, urban expansion, and environmental shifts.

Instagram takes on Snapchat with new 'Instagram Map'
Instagram rolled out its new Instagram Map feature in the U.S., offering users an optional “last active” location-sharing tool similar to Snapchat’s Snap Map, but with key privacy controls: location sharing is off by default and only updates when the app is opened. The map lives in the Direct Messages area, enabling users not just to share their location with chosen groups (such as mutual followers or close friends), but also to discover location-tagged Reels, Posts, Stories, and Notes from friends and creators nearby. Users can also leave short updates on the map, though Meta emphasizes the feature is opt-in and customizable.
